About the Role

Consultant Anaesthetist – Sussex

I am pleased to be working with a Trust based in Sussex that is currently looking to recruit a Consultant Anaesthetist to join its large and well-established department.

The department provides services across all major surgical specialties, offering the opportunity to undertake a diverse and rewarding clinical workload. Subspecialty areas include:

  • Thoracic anaesthesia
  • Orthopaedic and trauma surgery
  • Spinal and neurosurgery
  • Vascular surgery
  • Ophthalmic anaesthesia
  • Endoscopy and interventional radiology
  • Pre-assessment clinics

The Trust is seeking anaesthetists who can initially contribute to weekend general, obstetric, and neuro work. Over time, there will be opportunities to join specialist on-call rotas, subject to mutual agreement with the Care Group Lead and the needs of the Trust.

Job Responsibilities
The role will involve supporting a wide range of surgical services including:
  • Major general surgery
  • Vascular surgery
  • Ophthalmic surgery
  • Endoscopy
  • Neurosurgery and neuro-radiology
  • Spinal surgery
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Major Trauma Centre work

The Trust also provides services across dedicated elective sites covering multiple surgical specialties.

Initially, non-weekday working will involve weekend elective and non-elective session cover. In the longer term, appointees may have the option to transition to a specialist out-of-hours on-call rota, although this is not mandatory.

The job plan will typically include approximately five full-day lists per fortnight, with one expected to be a long list including an evening session. There may also be opportunities to run pre-assessment clinics, either generic or aligned with the individual's subspecialty interests.

Person Specification
Essential Requirements
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • At least 2 years of NHS or Irish experience at Specialty Trainee level or above
  • Evidence of independent subspecialty anaesthetic experience relevant to the role
  • Ability to undertake on-call responsibilities as described in the job plan
  • Evidence of participation in quality improvement and service development
